More shore images

I've been working on more pieces for my summer 2017 show in Grand Haven, MI. I've overlaid navigational charts of Lake Michigan on the sail and depth charts of the lake can be glimpsed in some of the water strips. It is 11"H x 14"W. With the 8"x8" gull collage, I've added vertical strips and painted and sanded a frame around the bird. I think I'll do some more experimenting with painting frames around imagery.

Gift

A dear friend just moved to a new city. I grabbed one of her photographs from her FB page and created this artwork as a housewarming gift for her.

By the shore

I'm going to be the featured artists in July-August 2017 at C2C Gallery in Grand Haven, Michigan. I've started working with some imagery for that show. The lighthouse is on the shore of Grand Haven and I've made the collage at 8" x 8". The gull is a 6" x 6" collage. I used some natural sand texture gel on each -- in the water of the lighthouse collage and in the surf behind the gull.

Commission

I was commissioned to make art for a couple who was retiring and selling their independent bookstore. For extra interest, I embedded some pieces of text from books into the brick wall of the bookstore.  :-)

2 more Galena pieces

These 6"H x 12"W pieces feature photos of Galena, old and new. Available at Maggie Black Gallery in downtown Galena.

Galena Illinois

I made these two 8" x 8" collages for Maggie Black gallery in Galena Illinois. Stop in their store and ask to see my work!

Another Italy collage

This is an 18"H x 24"W piece I made in April but forgot to post! It depicts Manarola, one of the 5 fishing villages in Italy referred to as Cinque Terre. This has a nice deep view from the grasses in the foreground, to the crashing surf, the houses perched on the rocky cliff and the Ligurian Sea beyond.

More Artist Trading Cards

I enjoyed making those miniature art pieces last month and made some more for the gallery walk the first Friday in June in downtown Bloomington.

A fourth Italy collage

The five villages of Cinque Terre, Italy are so magical! I just had to make another collage from one of my photos – this time the village of Manarola. It is 18" x 24". I like the depth of this one with the grasses in the foreground, the surf against the rocks the village is perched on top of, and the Ligurian Sea beyond.

Artist's Trading Cards

For the First Friday Art Walk in Bloomington, Illinois, the galleries all featured Artist Trading Cards. Slightly bigger than a business card, these were first made by artists to trade examples of their work amongst each other. Now they've become ways for people to buy miniatures from artists -- and hopefully they'll come back for bigger art on another day! Here is the art I made for the event. Some are made with scraps leftover from larger collages. For others I reduced files from larger collages to print out at this small size.

A good start on a series

I've now made three pieces of art from photos I took in Cinque Terre, Italy. The five fishing villages along the Ligurian Sea are charming with their colorful buildings and boats in the bay and along the streets. I added faint script in the sky of all three works; the script came from letters I photographed in a museum at the University of Bologna. I like how it gives interest to the sky and creates a feeling of written memories or a story the viewer doesn't have enough clues to decipher. Additionally, I ran several different filters on each scene, cut prints of those into strips and pieced together the strips to create more of an impression of the places -- taking each beyond a photographic depiction of the villages.

Just back from Italy...

I spent the month of December in Italy and came back with many photos to work with for art. This is the first of many to come. It started with a photo of Riomaggiore,  a village in Cinque Terre, and I overlaid text in the sky from a letter displayed in a museum in Bologna. The panel is 12"H x 9"W.

Another Christmas commission

I made this 18"H x 24"W piece to be gifted to a man whose heritage is Chinese and Hawaiian.
